Day 20 – I’m Going to Iron Those Wrinkles Out

Today was a great day for my inspiration.  I was reading a book (Vision, Composition, and Photography by Ernst A. Weber, 1980 ) and came across a few short paragraphs that are going to help me move into new territory and better define my style.  On page 26, he was discussing the spectrum from original/novel information  to ordinary/everyday information.  Based on what he says, people dismiss both the novel and the ordinary.  First they dismiss the ordinary because it is boring to them.  They dismiss the novel because of their lack of understanding and the fact that there is no reference point.  He suggests that the optimal amount of information is a combination of the novel and the ordinary to elicit interest and attention (with a slight bit more of the novelty).  This gives the recipient a foundation to understand or ingest the novel information.  This doesn’t apparently just apply to information but to how we interact with our world.  If this is so, then some of the ideas that I have wanted to pursue in my photography have been right on the mark.  One of the slants that I have wanted to incorporate in my photography was to take what looks like an ordinary scene but change it slightly so that it just isn’t quite right.  Often I consider subtly in this endeavor.  As I was considering the words I had read today, I had so many ideas just cascading out of my head.  One such idea lead to my photo shoot for today.  I was thinking about how folks want to get rid of wrinkle…irons get rid of wrinkles in clothes so why not in skin.  My initial thought did not have a humorous slant but the images surely did come out with such a slant.  In fact they are down right silly.  I was putting on my “messin-with-my-face-look” when I started taking pictures and it just looks ridiculous.  Unfortunately it is probably quite an accurate reflection of my face when I do this sort of stuff.  Anyway, it is a fun way to spend some time on a Friday afternoon when I am already especially happy and excited because my life is just so darn grand.
